More than a million people across the country say they are very likely to be forced to turn to food banks if the UK government goes ahead with plans to cut Universal Credit payments by £20 a week this October.
This will be the biggest overnight cut to social security since World War Two – for some families, it will mean suddenly losing up to a fifth of their income.
It will be a devastating blow for millions of households which are already struggling to make ends meet. If you then include the removal of rent caps and planned increases in energy prices it will impact those who are most vulnerable in our society.

But it doesn’t have to be like this.
Social security should be strong enough for all of us to rely on when we need a lifeline – because, as the pandemic has shown us, life is full of things we can’t plan for.
This October, the government must choose to keep the lifeline and protect people when they need support, not cut them adrift.
